‘NOT ANYMORE’- NEW SINGLE RELEASE BY APRIL GALLO

Sweet and smoky would be two words to describe April Gallo’s new single Not Anymore. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this new track, it’s such an easy listen and definitely one of those songs you can get swept away in. The single marks April’s third release as this song shows that we need more of the natural soul she brings to the Melbourne music scene.

April’s music career began in the humble surrounds of her family lounge room in the back streets of Brunswick. The singer songwriter recorded Not Anymore in a Brunswick studio by Kb808, who also produced her previous singles, Help Yourself & What You Lost. I also love that within the new track, many artists come together to bring it the new single life, featuring the guitarist for Sampa The Great, Kumar Shome, on guitar & bass, as well as Jeremy Bennett on keys, and Luke McIvor on drums.

Now to the song, which is a MUST listen to. I had Not Anymore on repeat whilst writing this review and I honestly felt such peace and calmness whilst writing this entire review. The coolness mixed with the subtle husky quality that comes out in April’s voice throughout the entire song hits just perfect, it’s such a great vocal quality and really amplifies the entire vibe of the song. There is a definite likeness to artists like Amy Winehouse and Jorja Smith in terms of style and overall texture, which I love.

Not Anymore is the perfect example of what great minimalist music sounds like, there’s just so much room for the vocals to lead and play around. What I mean by this is that the time and space left by the instruments really enables April to add all those tasty vocal embellishments that add this glorious jazz, soul flavour. The rhythmic section does not take away from the vocals as the focal point which I really love, instead, they support April and really help her thrive.

April’s third single, Not Anymore, shows her love for soul music, whilst revealing a powerful new side to her. April sings of standing up for herself and breaking away from the constraints of a toxic relationship. The chorus proclaims, “you played me as your fool for too long, and I’m better than the words you said before”, signaling an important journey in self-realisation and newfound independence.”

Not Anymore is out today and has just been added to RSOM Presents on Spotify. Make sure to check out April’s socials to keep up to date on when the music video is going to drop.

If you’re after an easy, soulful listen, Not Anymore has to be on top of your list.
