‘I’M NOT KEEPING SCORE’- THE NEW SINGLE RELEASE BY ST. EMERALD
And just like that, St. Emerald have dropped yet another vibey single, I’m Not Keeping Score. The new track was released on the 12th of November by the Melbourne based musos and there’s no doubt it will be a fan favourite, just like their last drop, Feels Like I’ve Already Died. I’m Not Keeping Score, just like every other of the bands songs, is just down right great. It’s got everything you want in a song from catchy hooks, catchy lyrics and another signature guitar solo.
Without further adieu, let’s talk about the new single. From the band themselves, “Touching on themes of survival and societal pressures, I’m Not Keeping Score throws you face first into the self-reflection that comes with moving on from a messy end. Combined with the darker tones and hard hitting rhythm that they’ve adopted so well, St. Emerald really show their grittier side throughout this new release.”
It’s been a real joy following along with the boys. You can’t help but move along with the song, it’s got a great rhythm section that really drives and provides such a solid base for the vocals to sit on top of. Once you listen to the song, you’ll understand what I mean when I say that it’s just got one of those rhythms that you can’t help but physically vibe with, you’ll be moving side to side without even realising it. What’s really great about this new track is the solid structure, there’s a real sense of when and where one section starts and finishes without it sounding disjointed or melodically irrelevant at all.
Although I’m Not Keeping Score follows quite a traditional structure in terms of the way the song works, its full of raw and natural sounding rhythmic elements, which is really refreshing for a change. St. Emerald stay true to themselves and their iconic sound by keeping things simple, nothing is over produced or over edited. You can clearly hear the every instrument in the new track is live recorded and this really adds to the wholesome and edgy energy that comes through. And shoutout to another epic guitar solo, the boys are great at highlighting their musical talents by always providing a tasty riff, it’s undeniably great.
“Really fun fact about this one, we were lucky enough to team up with CJ from Mako Road to bring this one to life, and managed to produce the entire record remotely between Melbourne and New Zealand. It was a crazy experience and we learnt heaps! The way we met CJ was quite unorthodox (as with most good things in this industry), so if you're curious on the story behind how we met him and got working together, we'd be happy to share the BTS! Liam, Nath, Cam and Josh all recorded their parts alone within lockdown. We then got the recordings to Ryan who packaged them up and sent them off to CJ in NZ. Then for each revision we would all jump on a zoom call as a band, collate notes and send them off to CJ in NZ to refine. CJ was brilliant in understanding as well as refining our vision. Originally he came back to us with a more condensed version of the song, which we have now released as the 'Single Version', with an extended original version to follow on our sophomore EP release (this will be coming in 2022!).”- St. Emerald
