DEBUT RELEASE: ‘Older & Wiser’ by Camryn Fitzgerald
Ocean Grove singer songwriter Camryn Fitzgerald has released her debut single ‘Older & Wiser’, an incredibly catchy and heartfelt indie pop song that grabs you from the first second. This break-up anthem brilliantly purveys the sense of loss and longing when a long-term relationship comes to an end.
Camryn explains, “Growing up is hard and painful - no matter how wise we become, some feelings never go away. With ‘Older and Wiser’ I hope to somehow let go of some of these emotions.”
This song is incredibly emotional in a reflective sense, as the song is built around these feelings of not being able to move past the person she once was. As is seen in the lyrics “I might be three years older, but I still feel like eighteen I might be five years wiser, but this still feels like sixteen.”
Camryn describes this song as a cathartic exercise, a song that vocalises thoughts she may not have been able to portray otherwise. These emotions come across in the vocals brilliantly, with a very controlled vocal performance Camryn is able to create emotion at a good vocal range that is not overdone. There is the sense that she is holding back, purveying the difficulty in talking about the feelings she has. She is able to create nuance throughout the song at this controlled level, with the intro, middle and ending all transitioning brilliantly. A highlight in this song is the Acapella at the end as she ties the song together singing, “Being older and wiser won’t stop it from biting Older and wiser, older Being older and wiser won’t stop it from biting Older and wiser, older”.
Her voice is melded beautifully into the instrumentation and production of the song. Very reminiscent of bands such as Eliza and the Delusionals, the wailing guitars played by Lachie Dunn really tie this song together. The riff carries the listener from beginning to end with a melancholic tone that Camryn is able to glide over perfectly.
For a debut single, Camryn is able to show great maturity and style, by identifying the sound and themes of her music she has been able to execute on a great indie pop song that demonstrates great potential moving forward.
