‘FEELS LIKE I’VE ALREADY DIED’ THE NEW RELEASE BY ST. EMERALD
I really just want to start off this review with full disclosure; I am a sucker for a good guitar riff or two, so I instantly felt musical pleasure when hearing the newest single released by St. Emerald, “Feels Like I’ve Already Died”. The 4 boys from the Dandenong ranges here in Melbourne have gone ahead and released a fun, head bopper of a song, full of soul, soft grunge and a real ‘Melbourne Muso’ vibe (if you know you know…)
St. Emerald is made up of Liam, Nathan, Cam, and Josh, who were all apart of writing and producing their latest single. The boys have had previous success with earlier releases, including ‘Sienna’, which was released back in 2019 and has just under 23,000 plays on Spotify, pretty impressive!
As a muso myself, I can really appreciate the rhythmic work that has gone into ‘Feels Like I’ve Already Died.’ The single is riddled with catchy guitar hooks and melodic embellishments that are so clean and well refined it makes my heart sing. It’s like there’s a shift in gear when approaching a new section in the song, you can feel and hear it coming, really provokes a sweet sensation of anticipation.
“The music we’re making now is definitely grungier and deeper than what we’ve put out so far. We have started to show a different side to us than what everyone may be used to after ‘Worried Hearts’, but we love the new sound we’ve fallen into. We love making music that provokes thought and contemplation, or asks a question of oneself on a more philosophical level. Music is at its most powerful when it encourages you to reflect and learn” - Liam.
I think what makes this song so good is the solid mix of grunge provided from those driving drums and dirty eclectic guitar and the softness that comes through from the vocals. You can hear the purity in the whole mix, it hasn’t been washed with effects or overly polished, its raw and real, which is reflective of what the inspiration behind the new single was.
Written from a place of authenticity, ‘Feels Like I’ve Already Died’ is so relatable, which is what also makes this song special. It was inspired by a breakup, something that all of us can sympathies with and understand to some degree. It’s not in any way a cliché or something generic, it has its own taste and flair that we as listeners can use to understand where it was written from, and that’s not easy to always get across, but the boys have done it.
