‘CLEAN’ and ‘MARK FUCKERBERG’ new releases from Two Last Names
Two Last names is a punk rock band based in Sale/Bairnsdale that have been performing in the Gippsland region for a few years now. A band who focuses on intimate storytelling through their in-your-face music, there’s a great deal of Melbournians who should have this band on their radar.
The band’s style is best portrayed by two of their four singles, 2021’s ‘Clean’ and 2020’s ‘Mark Fuckerberg.’ ‘Mark Fuckerberg’ is a poignant commentary on the things we miss when looking at our phones. The messenger alert at the beginning of the song may have you contradicting yourself, but quickly you’ll be following along with the band’s very unique and excellent lyrical ability. Throughout the song, you follow a day in the life of the people we see around us, looking at their phones, not seeing the neighbours screaming at them or the kids calling them names. These sarcastic witty lyrics are paired with fantastic vocals, with great range sonically and emotively. You really feel the hopelessness of observing people we see on their phones or the angst we feel when we can’t connect to the world through the inflecting vocals. The instrumentals really invigorate this song as well, with the jittery guitars and grungy percussion this song is a real throwback to songs like MTV ‘Get Of The Air’ by the Dead Kennedys.
‘Clean’ is Two last Names Latest release. This track is about trying to navigate a relationship as a sexual assault survivor, a personal story that purveys the anger and insecurities that one encounters when they just want to be themselves. Again, the vocals and storytelling are excellent, you’re immediately hooked to the track as these emotions are expressed so intimately. This vocal style plays so well with the instrumentals of this band, a great punk throwback with commentary and stories that lots of people can relate to today. Just from these tracks alone there is a great deal of potential but there is more music to be listened to, be sure to check out the rest of the band’s discography that includes songs such as Can’t Get Comfy and Too young Too Old.
