TWO LAST NAMES NEW RELEASE- YAH YAH YAH
Gippsland outfit Two Last Names are back with a new single ‘YAH YAH YAH’ that sees their punk and lyrical prowess of old return alongside a musical shift for the band.
‘YAH YAH YAH’ demonstrates a more sombre sound from the group, who usually bring an energetic rhythm to their music. The aggressiveness and punk roots remain, however with the subject matter and tone of this new track, there is a welcome diversion that is unashamed and truthful. This is a track that is brutally personal, self-analytic and honest. Addressing a relationship, this track lists behaviours and feelings that have stopped and started over time. Shown by lyrics such as “I’ve stopped talking to my loved ones” and “I’ve started tolerating shit you shouldn’t get away with’.
There is a constant back and forth that mirror’s one’s internal dialogue, although sometimes dreary it is extremely empowering at the same time. Acknowledging these thoughts and addressing the cause, vocalised through a gritty Australian punk tone that gives a lot for listeners to grab onto. For people who have listened to Two Last Names before there lyrical power is at the forefront in this fresh musical structure.
Instrumentally Two last names have stuck to their punk roots with heavy snares and gravelly guitar riffs. The musical shift comes in the track’s focus, there is definitely an intent with this track to let the vocals take the listener on this internal journey. The guitars and drums willingly but brilliantly take the back seat as this tracks vocals lecture and honestly describes ones thought process when self-evaluating. This decision is no more apparent than throughout the chorus, a decision that executes the message and tone of the song excellently as the vocals relate a self-described ‘individual’ who is “the same as all your mates”.
