SQUID THE KID RELEASES NEW SINGLE “CATER”

This lo-fi RNB hit from Squid The Kid is the kind of track you keep restarting for that smooth, funky twenty-second intro.

Immediately launching into mesmerising harmonies on the very first word, this automatically sets the mood for the rest of the track. Despite the lyrics being short, punchy and sweet, they still manage to follow a strong and memorable melody. Toward the end of Cater, we hear the introduction of additional backing vocals. These soft and dulcet feminine vocals incorporate a sultry feel to our final verse and chorus— a technique most typically seen in the RNB genre.

The blend of the muted pop-electric keyboard and the grand piano chords create a velvety yet punctuated chemistry that places Cater dead smack in the middle of the chillwave, lo-fi genre. The tempo remains consistent throughout, consisting almost entirely of a soft top-hat and a muted bass. Cater definitely settles well within the ‘foot-tapping’ category of hip-hop.

“The origins of this song were from a misunderstanding that I had with my girlfriend at the time. My mind wasn’t clear, there was something bugging it. At that moment I realised what I wanted this song to signify. I really took reference from Destiny's Child ‘Cater 2 U’, the main message of their song was how they just want to look after and care for their loved one.” Squid The Kid.

While the lyrics or content of Cater aren’t relatively groundbreaking for the genre, Squid the Kid manages to deliver them in a way that recaptures your attention. The verses stick to the same repetitious flow, but this only serves to aid in the same foot-tapping effect aforementioned.

Needless to say, while writing this review, the only thing that kept replaying in my head was that very same chorus, over and over again. Cater has definite potential to become earworm material.

His other singles, Games, KOZSYZN, Lazy and Drunk Thoughts all seem to share a similar chillwave, lo-fi hip-hop feel. At only 24, Squid The Kid is still new to the scene, but if this is any indicator of the music to come, we can say with confidence that he looks to have a promising future in the industry.
