PLAYLUNCH DEBUTS SINGLE ‘NO HAT NO PLAY’
Debutants to the Melbourne music scene Playlunch are opening their discography with a bang. Their first single ‘No Hat No Play’ has a groove and confidence that signals a promising future for the band.
From the get-go, this track will make you get up and dance as the layered instrumentation of tingling symbols and maracas lead the band’s rhythmic introduction. Boldly ending with, “This is Playlunch”, the immediate confidence pays off with a high funky tempo that is littered with flashy guitars and punchy trumpets. Playlunch executes on what they label ‘bogan funk,’ a playful approach to music making that sometimes even causes the lead singer Liam Bell to laugh, as he belts out “when the Landlord hears our set, he’s gonna give you an eviction”.
This is a song that is simply about listening to Playlunch at a house party, a message that Is defiantly executed and one that I hope comes true one day. The track includes samples from Australian comedians Aunty Donna who attribute to the overall message of the song in a tasteful way that complements the track.
“Everyone’s desperate for a bit of fun, and that's what we’re trying to create. I feel like we’ve all had our morale knocked out of us during the pandemic, and we need something to unite us now more than ever. This project is unapologetically joyful, and celebrates the most fun and ridiculous parts of Australian culture,” - says front man Liam.
Reminiscent of bands such as Bloc Party, lead singer Liam’s lyrical and vocal style bring an Australian twist to the funk genre. Vocally, the front man demonstrates a fantastic range and inflections. With the bold and heavy instrumentation, Liam’s vocals are not overshadowed as they confidently groove with the song to add that distinct Australian tone. This is paired with the playful, comedic moments such as, “Doctor help me! I can’t stop writing bangas,” are so jarring but enjoyable especially in times like these. It’s good to appreciate music that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
A fantastic debut, we are very looking forward to seeing what comes next from this refreshing, fun and cheeky group.
