NEW SINGLE RELEASE – TWO LAST NAMES ‘INTERSTATE GROWING PAINS’
Two Last Names have returned with their new single ‘Interstate Growing Pains,’ an emo/punk rock track that describes the internal conflict of returning home to the people who love you. A musical exploration for the band, this track shows huge diversity in their new releases that further cements their place in the Victorian music scene.
Unlike their previous releases, this brand new single has bended completely into the emo realm. A genre the band has previously teetered on the edge of, these structural and instrumental adaptations have made this song their strongest release to date.
The opening section of this song almost sounds like something you’d hear from American Football, with a sad reflective tone that still yields their beautiful sounding guitars. As they reverberate a melancholic riff, you become truly immersed in the emotion of the song. The guitars and drums gradually build with the vocal performance in an excitingly grungy explosion of emotion. The emotional impact of this song all comes from the structure, extremely well thought out, the pay off at the end of the track is monumentally rewarding as the vocal performance blends amazingly with the instrumental layering.
The vocal and lyrical performances of Two Last Names have always been excellent. It was often a conflict in instrumental structure that hampered the previous release’s ability to really find the essence of the lyrics. However, it is on this track that the band have really found a breakthrough. There is a real synchronicity about the direction of the song.
Allowing the great lyrical structure of the song to shine through, the lyrics read as an internal dialogue. Ridden with anxiety and self-doubt the emotions of this song come across in a genuine way that all great emo/punk rock tracks achieve. Again, this pay off at the end of the track and the explosion of emotion that comes with it show how great this band can be lyrically.
