GUTHRIE RELEASES MELANCHOLIC NEW TRACK ‘DICKHEAD SONG’
Melbourne musician Guthrie is back with new single ‘Dickhead Song’, an emotional track that navigates the complexities of changing relationships with friends, and the act of telling someone close to you that you are concerned at their current situation.
Recorded at a 4-hour covid picnic, ‘Dickhead Song’ is exceptional in its production, lyrics and vocal synthesis. A beautifully executed folk/electronica song that will have you thinking of your closest friends from the song’s inception.
With the soft guitars and whistles that accompany Guthrie’s emotive voice, there is an immediate warmth that carries throughout, playing like a conversation between two friends that you are eavesdropping upon. ‘Dickhead Song’ embraces its recording studio, a park setting that is audible throughout, little chirps from birds and brushes of wind guide this track wonderfully through a narrative that many will relate to. This does not overcrowd the track as Guthrie’s voice is perfectly centre stage as they recall, “how you’d be the first to say to me…if it were the other way.” Although very personal, Guthrie has done an amazing job in their writing to produce lyrics that are accessible and deeply emotive.
Mixed by Alex O’Gorman (Angie McMahon) and mastered by Isaac Barter (Alex The Astronaut) “Dickhead Song” has a beautiful blend of instrumentation and vocals that allow Guthrie’s voice to be sincere and soulful throughout. With melancholic keys and synths that back up the emotional subject matter there is a lot of connections to made with artists such as Stella Donnelly or Bon Iver. A four-minute song that covers lot of ground gracefully and never overstays its welcome, Guthrie does an amazing job of capturing the deeply personal essence of this song. A familiar sound with an evident step up in production from their previous releases, Guthrie is shaping up to be one of the most promising up and coming artists Melbourne has to offer.
