‘MIND THE GAP’ - THE NEW RELEASE FROM MAYA ROSE

Following the release of her debut single, ‘See You Again’ and EP ‘Time’, Maya Rose’s next single ‘Mind the Gap’, which discusses gender inequality is sure to have all eyes on where the young starlet will go next.

Mind the Gap is an extremely powerful first look Into Maya Rose’s upcoming EP release, harnessing her experiences of the gender gap in the music industry to produce an empowering anthem that is lyrically, musically and creatively brilliant. The overall message and execution of this song should get people excited for what is promised to be a deeply introspective EP that explores socio-political messages that can be connected with worldwide.

Maya’s musical journey began from a very young age as she learnt to play piano and write songs from the age of fourteen. At the same time, she was surrounded by the sounds of R&B and soul at home, helping her develop the soulful voice and style that we hear today.

Maya has been making waves in both her hometown of Castlemaine in regional Victoria as well as metro Melbourne with her stunning vocals and soothing beats. She was crowned the winner of the 2017 Battle of the Bands in Castlemaine whilst her previous single, ‘See You Again’ (2019) received much praise from triple j. Later that year, Maya was nominated for “Best Regional/Outer Suburban Act” at the Music Victoria Awards in 2019.

Maya worked in the studio with Julian Steel on the brand new track and both must receive plaudits for the overall feel and sound that is produced here. The 90’s style soul/R&B really compliments Maya’s voice, sprinkled with soft pianos and saxophone riffs the song glides along as a very easy listen. As the song builds towards the tail end the great synthesis between voice and instrumentals is demonstrated just as soul/R&B inspirations like Sade have done before. The individual parts of this track come together in such a natural way with the smooth basslines, additional ad libs that build with heavier input from the saxophone the song culminates as a really impressive creative statement.  The instrumentals do not overpower the song however, the excellent voice of Maya Rose builds with the instrumentals in tandem allowing her message to take centre stage.

“It’s time that we not only talk about the disadvantages women face every day in our community; it is important to express the issues creatively”- Maya Rose

Lyrically this song is excellent, there are questions asked of the listener “How are we gonna close the gap?” tied to important social messages of empowerment “Enough is enough” that together form a message that can resonate with many people around the world. These broader themes all connect to the introspective and personal experiences explored in the song that are seen throughout the music industry “He’s making decisions for me; he’s leaving me out”.

The overall tone of this message comes across clearly and resolutely, shown by lyrics like ‘He won’t get away with it”, especially at the end of the song as it fades and Maya concludes with “No more” there is an immediacy that is rightly demanded, change that can only come through amplifying female voices across the industry and the world right now.

Overall, this song is a great revival of the 90’s R&B genre that powerfully resonates an important global message through the lens of the music industry in a profound and personal way. If this track is an indicator for the route Maya Rose’s EP will take it’s going to be an extremely promising return after the 2019 EP.
