‘FRUIT’- THE NEW RELEASE FROM BARES
Melbourne based Bares is back after her recent collaboration with SKYEPAINT to sing us into the summer months with new track ‘Fruit.’ A groovy throwback to 70’s soul music, ’Fruit’ details the anxiety of an approaching summer as we begin to self-evaluate and consider how far we’ve come in the space of a year.
“I always feel a looming sense of panic when the weather starts to get warm again which is possibly the combination of an innate feeling of unproductivity leading up to the end of the year- like I haven’t achieved enough, haven’t exercised enough, I haven’t spent my year wisely,” - Bares.
Bares’ journey begins in the western suburbs of Sydney where summers weren’t filled with the anxiety they present us today.
“As a kid, summer meant school holidays, beach trips, and Christmas presents, but lately summers in Australia aren’t so uncomplicated,” - she says.
Written, recorded and produced by Ella Sterland and Renee Stein they crafted the song over many Zoom sessions with band mate Jazure. The track is incredibly catchy, it glides along with the soulful ad libs, throwback keys and groovy basslines. Vocally the song is brilliant, complemented by the background singers that float beautifully with the instrumentals. Lyrically this song addresses anxieties and stresses as we enter the summer months, read like an internal panic attack the grooves of this song don’t hide the self-reflection at hand. “I don’t want to make it about me, I feel like I’m drifting carefully…” Fruit sees its inspiration in LORDE, H.E.R and St. Vincent, inspirations the track definitely lives up to.
Bares began releasing music in 2017 with a self-titled EP. The experience of releasing the debut EP encouraged Bares to pursue further releases as her following single Montage put her on the map as it featured in Netflix show Terrace House and today boats over 600k streams. Singles ‘Gone’ and ‘April,’ released in 2019 and 2020, which were followed by her second EP ‘Overdue’ which was released in the height of last year’s Melbourne Lockdown, furthering the ambition and production of her soulful style. At the beginning of this year, Bares teamed up with SKYEPAINT to release two tracks with heavier electronic influences, reminiscent of bands like CHVRCHES showing the ambition of Bares as she branches out.
Bares wants this track to connect with fellow winter lovers out there dreading the coming months as we emerge out of months of lockdown. As we reflect on the year that has gone past, this track is an immense return to the bands roots that you can reminisce upon and will have you at least happy that you discovered this song before the year ended.
The new single ‘Fruit’ from Bares is out now on the RSOM Presents Spotify Playlist.
