PLAYLUNCH RELEASE PARODY OF ABC CLASSIC, ‘SOUPE OPERA’

An addition to the aptly termed bogan funk genre, ‘Soupe Opera’ is another playful exploration into the psyche of kids that grew up in the naughties.

Following up their debut track ‘No Hat No Play,’ Playlunch have taken a 90’s style rhythmic turn. Filled with groovy basslines and ad libs that will have every kid that grew up in the naughties reminiscing, this beautifully crafted soup allows the vocals to play around in this bogan funk. Taking inspiration from the ABC show ‘Soupe Opera’ that would, “fill the time between the news and Bob the Builder,” Playlunch have again found their Gen Z audience and have really given them what they ask for.

“It was a super weird experience trying to clear the sample. It took ages to even find the people who made it - a French animation studio, with a website that looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2004. They were emailing us in French, we were replying in English, negotiating an agreement and praying that Google translate was effectively finding the French term for ‘an absolute bop’,” - Liam

The rhymes on this song are brilliantly executed with great whit that will unlock memories across the suburbs. ‘I lied to try and find respite and lighten the load of that primary school day grind. The kind of boredom you know, ’tween daytime TV shows ain’t airing Dragon Ball, ain’t airing Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh.’

Supported by howling trumpets that are essential for this funk style that the band have become accustomed too, this track creates the feeling of being in a share house jazz club. The bouncy basslines really contribute to this as well, allowing the lead vocals to display this great character that puts the Playlunch stamp on this song.

“Everyone knows the show - literally everyone. They don’t remember what it was called, they don’t know who made it, but everyone remembers the sound of that cursed opera singer wailing out ‘Soupe Operaaaa!” - Liam

Since their debut in April this year, Playlunch have been causing a splash in the Melbourne music scene, packing out venues such as The Curtin, Yah Yahs and Cherry Bar, and supporting Murray the Red Wiggle’s project The Soul Movers.

You can catch Playlunch this Friday July 22nd at Revolver Bandroom as they celebrate the release of ‘Soupe Opera’ with special guests Bailey Judd and Barefoot Bowls Club.
